KOAH Speargun Safety, Use & Maintenance Manual
At KOAH, we pride ourselves on building some of the most accurate, durable, and powerful spearguns on the water. Whether you're diving reefs, wrecks, or chasing pelagics offshore, your KOAH gear is built to perform - but it’s only as good as the care you give it. Please read and follow these safety and maintenance guidelines carefully to keep your gear working at its best - and to help you stay safe in the water.
Safety First, Always!
Spearguns are serious tools. They’re not toys, and misusing one can cause severe injury or worse. Whether you're new to spearfishing or a seasoned hunter, never skip safety.
Speargun Safety Rules:
- Never point a loaded speargun at anyone, including yourself - even as a joke.
- Always load your speargun in the water, and only when you’re ready to hunt.
- Unload before returning to the boat or handing the gun to someone else.
- Know your surroundings. Don’t fire toward other divers, boats, or anything you don’t intend to shoot.
- Check your shot line and rigging for tangles or obstructions before loading.
- Don’t modify the trigger or safety system in any way.
- Store unloaded, with bands removed or relaxed, away from heat or direct sunlight.
*Note: KOAH spearguns are powerful by design. Never over-band your gun - it can compromise accuracy and safety.
Care & Maintenance
KOAH spearguns are handcrafted using high-end hardwoods, stainless steel, and carbon fiber - all designed for performance and longevity. But saltwater is unforgiving, and routine care is essential.
After Every Dive:
Rinse thoroughly with fresh water, including the trigger mechanism, muzzle, shaft track, and reel.
Dry completely before storing. Wipe down wooden components and inspect for any swelling or damage.
Rinse shaft and flopper; apply a light coat of silicone or oil to prevent rust.
Every Few Trips:
Inspect all hardware: bands, crimps, mono or cable, trigger, and safety.
Lubricate moving parts in the trigger and line release with silicone spray (avoid petroleum-based products).
Check your bands for cracks or dry rot. Replace every 6–12 months depending on use and exposure.
Wood Speargun Care:
KOAH spearguns are finished with a multi-layer epoxy or oil sealant.
Never leave your speargun soaking for extended periods.
If using an oiled wood finish (on select custom builds), reapply tung oil as needed. Lightly sand with 400 grit and oil when wood appears dull or dry.
Band Care Tips
Keep bands out of direct sunlight when not in use.
Store in a cool, dry place.
Rinse with fresh water after each dive.
If you rotate between guns, rotate your bands to even out wear.
Shaft Maintenance
KOAH shafts are made from hardened stainless steel - corrosion resistant, not corrosion-proof.
Rinse, dry, and occasionally apply a light silicone oil to the shaft and flopper.
Inspect flopper action regularly - it should move freely but close snug.
Trigger Mechanism Maintenance
Our KOAH triggers are precision-machined stainless steel units that are incredibly reliable with proper care.
Rinse with fresh water after each use.
Every few dives, spray with silicone lubricant.
Avoid sand or grit buildup - blow out with compressed air if needed.
Travel & Storage
Store KOAH spearguns in a padded bag or wrapped in towels during travel.
Remove shafts and bands when transporting or shipping.
Avoid storing in hot vehicles, sheds, or in direct sun - wood and rubber don’t like heat.
Warranty & Support
All KOAH spearguns are backed by a limited warranty against manufacturing defects. Normal wear and tear, misuse, or lack of maintenance are not covered. If you have questions, concerns, or just want advice on care, reach out to us directly - we’re here to help.
